#6 Genre Research
In this blog, I will be researching different genres that I can use for my film and the conventions used. Pre-planning my genre and the conventions I want to use/include are important to me because it keeps my project organized for when I start filming.
As I was researching different movies for inspiration I took note of all of their genres. Each one had a genre of romance with a sub-genre of either comedy or drama. For my final project, I will be sticking with romance as my genre. Some of my favorite movies of all time and movies that have made an impact on the way I view the world are categorized as romance.
The genre of romance is defined as focusing on a couple and their path to happiness. Some conventions you typically see in a romance film are a happy ending, labels, and a main love story. In my film, I want to utilize Nick Lacey's research on genre conventions and how it creates familiarity with the audience. I want parts of my film to make my audience happy and excited to see what happens next.
There are also some things I would like to change to make my film interesting. Changing certain aspects of my film is very important because I do not want the audience to get bored because it looks like every other film. Since my topic is teenagers feeling all alone in life until they find someone who understands them, it is not normally seen in film because teen mental health is being represented. For my differences, instead of having a straight path to happiness or having both my characters be happy when they first meet, I will show them how to help each other get better and build each other up.
